Overview
LifeCourse Academy (LCA) is an alternative learning program developed and operated in conjunction with Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS), as well as, the Wake Local Management Entity.
The purpose of the Long-term Suspension Program component is to provide specialized education and enrichment services to students at high risk of academic failure due to chronic behavioral problems and emotional difficulties. The programmatic goal is to promote the academic achievement and social skills necessary for on-going success in both the classroom and society. In addition to receiving academic instruction under the NC Standard Course of Study, students are taught to understand their individual strengths and weaknesses concerning learning ability, and are provided in comprehensive behavioral instruction encompassing life-skills building, interpersonal relationships, critical thinking, conflict resolution, and substance abuse prevention.
Shared Operating Goals
* To assess behaviors that are requisite for classroom success such as anger management, group participation, teamwork, social skills and completing required tasks. * To teach students the cognitive skills necessary to regulate and self-monitor their own behavior consistent with social norms. * To work in unison with WCPSS to insure academic integrity at all times. * To enhance student self esteem and personal accountability. * To provide a drug-free and safe learning environment. * To orient students toward successful relationships with authority figures. * To provide life-skills instruction needed for the successful participation in a civil society. * To provide students with consistency and a sincere positive attitude to help establish trust and respect. * To provide direct or referral support to students/families if non-LCA service needs are identified.
* To provide a professional staff/team with a diverse background in education, career, and life experience.
* To assist WCPSS in reintegrating students when appropriate to a less restrictive learning environment.
